Dr. Robyn Hughes’ interest in natural medicine began as a child in Colorado, when she was fascinated by how the body healed itself after a fall or cut. While growing up, she developed an interest in the complex interaction of mind and body.
Dr. Robyn attended Indiana University, where she studied cognitive science, business management, psychology, Spanish, and pre-medical sciences. Concurrently, she worked in the offices of various healthcare practitioners in Colorado, Oregon, and Edinburgh, Scotland.
Dr. Robyn received her doctoral degree (ND) from the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon, one of the top accredited schools in the country for naturopathic medicine. The training involved a rigorous 5-year course of study which included all basic medical sciences and conventional diagnostics (just like MDs) as well as extensive coursework in botanical medicine, nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, physical medicine, psychology, minor surgery, and more than 1500 hours of supervised clinical practice. Dr. Robyn received additional homeopathy training in the 2-year program through the New England School of Homeopathy.
Following medical school, Dr. Robyn worked with renowned sports podiatrist Dr. Ray McClanahan at Northwest Foot & Ankle in Portland, where she learned about natural, non-invasive treatment approaches to ailments of the foot, ankle, knee, and lower back.
In 2009, Dr. Robyn relocated to North Carolina and entered into private practice at Durham Natural Health. Along with Dr. Lidia Tomulet, Dr. Robyn is the only board-certified naturopathic physician practicing in Durham. She maintains a license in the state of Vermont and is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) and the North Carolina Association of Naturopathic Physicians (NCANP).
When not working in the practice, Dr. Robyn can be found bicycling in the beautiful North Carolina hills, organic gardening, playing music, sampling nutritious and delicious cuisine, and reading novels.
Dr. Robyn’s vision of optimal healthcare is a system that is personalized, holistic, health-promoting, environmentally-connected, and cost-effective. Her ultimate goal is to provide the education for patients to realize their own inherent potential to achieve optimal health.
